[this is a preliminary review until I finish reading them]This is the first of what I hope will be 4 volumes reprinting the complete Dusty Ayres series. Dusty Ayres ran for 12 issues, and this volume reprints the first 3. We have yet to get a complete reprint of this series. Corinth reprinted the first 4, then the final along with a collection of short stories from the back of the pulp. High Adventure reprinted the first 2 and didn't do any more.
Dusty Ayres was an unusual series, even for Popular Publications. It was an 'air war' series set in the then near future. It also had a continuing storyline thru the whole series. Published in 1934/35, it detailed the conquest of Asia and Europe by a mysterious leader known as "Fire-Eyes". The US holds out, lead by pilot Dusty Ayres.
Strangely enough, the series ended with the 12th novel with "Fire-Eye" defeated. One thing I had heard recently was it was always planned for 12 stories, which I've never heard of. I had assumed that they were going to cancel it, and allowed the author to wrap up the storyline in the last issue. Which is true? Reading the intro, which has info on the author Robert Bowden and Dusty Ayres, its clear it was cancelled due to less then stellar sales, and the author was allowed to wrap things up in what would be the last issue.

There are a few complains about this collection. I was disappointed by the lack of any interior artwork from the original pulps. I've gotten used to this in other collections from Altus Press, Age of Aces, etc. And I was disappointed that the original pulp covers where not featured on the back cover in some way. Again, I've gotten used to that with other reprints.

Dusty AyresInvasion of the Black Lightning edition by Robert Sidney Bowen Frederick Blakeslee Tom Roberts Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This has some of the manic energy of The Spider.
If you like the apocalyptic Operator 5 then you'll probably enjoy this aviation pulp. Makes G8 seem pedestrian.
First of all, with my kindle set at maximum words per page this book is well over 400 pages and would be around 500 at a typical setting. The extremely misleading 266 page count description is from the large paperback edition.
How many sales have they lost not making the simple correction for the e-book edition?
I've only read the first novel so far and it was excellent.
The setting is ominous with the U.S. on the verge of being conquered by a brilliant and ruthless Asian dictatorship lead by a mysterious and seemingly superhuman leader. The action is furious and well described with spectacular ariel combat and weird military technology.
If the following 2 stories are as good as the first then this will be a five star book.
